The Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) (now Defence Delivery Group) is one of the most complex divisions in Australia’s Department of Defence, with responsibilities spanning assets, personnel, process and performance. Recognising the scale of this challenge, CASG engaged us over a two‑year period to strengthen its Plan, Do, Review (PDR) improvement methodology and support delivery of a major program of process improvement projects.
Our team provided coordination support to the PDR improvement program and facilitated the PDR process across more than 20 projects nationally, covering processes such as inductions, disposals, health and safety and surveillance. We coached, upskilled and certified APS and Defence personnel in the PDR process and associated tools, developed practical artefacts (including a solutions library and benefits calculator) to support future PDR projects, and undertook post investment appraisals to quantify realised benefits.
Each PDR project delivered significant outcomes, including optimised personnel capability, reduced financial costs and risk, increased morale and improved productivity, substantial reductions in holding stocks and associated savings, and markedly improved contractor relationships. Building on this success, we later returned to CASG to facilitate Lean Six Sigma Yellow and Green Belt coursework and review existing activities, helping CASG to consolidate and sustain its Lean program across the organisation.
